Photographer Interview: Donna Boucher (Quiet Life blog)

donna 1 By way of introduction: There are many photographers I admire. Many sites that make me drool. Miz Booshay is a photographer like no other. donna 5Her pictures are simple and beautiful. When I asked her to interview I said this: Many times I will begin shooting someone and I will throw props at them. Stylize them up. Beg them for smiles or frowns or whatevers….but, at the end of the session, what I want most, is a picture like you would take. Clear, beautiful and reflective of the person I am shooting. donna 1

Her work inspires me. Her life inspires me.donna 4 If you don’t know her, you simply must. I would encourage you to add her to your list of daily blog stops. She might not be shooting million dollar weddings. She might not have a site that cost hundreds of dollars a month. donna 3She might not be the exact sort of person you would imagine when you think of a great photographer, but please know this: Donna Boucher is the best photographer I have ever encountered.donna 2

Do you take a picture every day? donna 5     Nope. So close, but honestly, I have not picked up my camera about ten to fifteen days this year.donna 2Edited to add: Donna has started a 365 project this year. I know she will rock it right out of the park…just like she does everything else!donna 4

When you were learning about photography in high school, did you imagine it would play such an important role in your life as you grew older?donna 1

When I was in high school I loved to go in the library during study hall and lunch and look at all the big picture books filled with beautiful photography. I never imagined I would be a photographer, but I have always loved photographs.donna 3

Does your husband like to be in front of the camera?donna 5     Not really and he especially does not want his picture on the internet.donna 4

If someone gave you $100,000 today and you had 24 hours to spend it, what would you do with it?donna 2

Pay bills aka be debt free. Oh that would be glorious.donna 1

I would give to charities and our kids.donna 3

How did you decide on your logo for your business card? Do you hand it out a lot?  donna 1    I wanted to do something I hadn’t seen before.donna 2

When I saw Crystal Kluge’s beautiful work, I knew I wanted her cute and whimsical style to represent my brand.donna 3

I had the cards and thank you notes printed by Twin Ravens Press on Crystal’s blog recommendation.donna 5

I adore my logo. It makes me happy every time I look at it!donna 5     I do not hand it out nearly enough. (see question about my biz skillz)donna 4

What kind of shoots are your absolute favorite? One child? One baby? A family? Enlighten us.katie 3    My favorite shoots are one child and one high school senior…bumming around on a sunny day.katie 2

You have traveled many places, do you have a favorite shot from Paris? What place would you most like to visit again?donna 3

I have been fortunate to travel over the years. donna 2

I’ve been to many states and I especially love Hawaii. (It smells like heaven in Hawaii.)katie 1

Paris was magical, Rome was delightful and Switzerland and Austria were spectacular and enjoyable.donna 1

I would go back to France in a heartbeat.katie

I have never been to New York and I am dying to go there!katie 4

Why did you decide to home school? Did your children love their education?katie 6

We decided to home school because I wanted to teach our children what I wanted them to learn. I wanted to include our faith in our daily life and learning.katie 11    In the end I loved every minute of spending the days with our children.

Katie goes to school now and I miss her very much.katie 10

One of our sons hated being home with me all day and learning from me.

Sweet! ;o) He was home for three years and then we sent him on to a little Christian school with his brother (who was in high school).

We always took it one year at a time and tried to do what worked best for each child.katie 7

Do you think any of your children will ever become photographers?

Maybe Katie will….she says she would like to be a wildlife photographer or a star on Broadway.katie 8

Tell me about your grandbaby!katie 5

Asher is a happy, beautiful boy! We adore him so much.

He is spent Christmas with us and we were thrilled!miz 14

I know you love movies, are there any movies with a photography theme that you enjoyed?katie 9

Movies with photography? I can’t think of one. (Well, there is Funny Face, but I am not a fan of that movie.)

When it comes to movies I drool over gorgeous cinematography and unique shooting angles and stunning styling.

I think of Out of Africa and Slumdog Millionaire.katie 15     If you had the *honor* of participating in one Real Housewives episode what girls would you want to be with? What special thing would you do with all of them?katie 14

Well…I would do a photoshoot of them of course!

While I think Kim and NeNe are hilarious, I’m not sure I want to spend time with them….

Can I go and take pictures of Bonnie Hunt instead?miz 6

Can you share any up and coming photographers that you have been admiring? Someone the rest of the world might not know about yet?

Keri Anne Brown

I think Kerianne’s photographs are perfection.

She has a wonderful eye and fabulous style.katie 13

Do you have a business plan for your photography? Does all of that stuff overwhelm you, or do you enjoy that aspect of being a small business owner? Do you have any advice for someone that struggles with that aspect of photography?katie 12

I am the worst businesswoman. I was told that all you needed was word of mouth and great photos to make it as a natural light children’s photographer. This was a plan I was comfortable with!miz 4

Well. It’s not true.miz 3

You must work your business; you must promote it and market it like crazy.miz 2

I have a girlfriend who is working it and she is doing fabulous! But she is not waiting around for word of mouth.miz 1

You must be creative and daring. You must take risks and you must work it! miz

I absolutely love taking the perfectly natural beautiful picture and I am great at customer service…. miz 5   But I think I need someone to do all the rest for me.miz 11

Why don't you shoot weddings?miz 7

I don’t want to learn how to use a big flash.

It’s too scary.miz 13     Any special wisdom you want to share?miz 12

What happens matters.

Love one another.donna 1

Forgive one another.miz 8

Encourage one another.miz 10

Mean it.donna 4

I've been following Donna for a few years now. Her photos just simply blow me away every time. She is someone I'd love to meet one day and follow around on a shoot and learn...

I strive to be half as good a photographer as Miz Booshay is.

Oh . my . I have admired Miz Booshay from afar on PW's blog for a couple of years now. But Becky... you've made her real. And she's not that unlike me. Well, as long as you don't count the amazing photography (like that eyelash/freckle pic from above with the INCREDIBLE dof, and stuff like that). Or the fact that she actually has a business. OK, so she's not like me at ALL.. but she's who I would LIKE to be if I could. Does that count? Donna.. I heart you!!! Keep doing what you do.. you do it beautifully. And in the end, when it all comes down to it, it isn't about what you have. It's about who you are. And you... are the real thing. xoxox..

Thank you for showing us Donna's work in a new light. I've been following her for a couple of years and always enjoy seeing her photos, but the way you put everything together here really shows what a great recorder of people she is.

So thank you, Becky, for your talent in showing us what you see!

I love Donna. I love her photography. I love her great love for her family. I love her way with words. I love the "community" she's built at Quiet Life. I love her "realness" and come-as-you-are spirit. I love her encouragement to focus on stuff that really matters.

Fun piece of trivia: do you know I started my blog, because one day back in 2007 Donna encouraged me to put some of my pictures on the internet? True story. :-)
