‘Don't handicap your children by making their lives easy.’ ~Robert A. Heinlein

I hate to tell you what a fabulous mother I am all the time…so today, I am going to share a blunder. Hopefully you will not have to report me! I am not sure though…this is TERRIBLE!shots8
Kaish turned 11 a few weeks ago. Remember? So, I knew, as all normal mothers do, that it was time for his yearly Dr. appointment.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I sort of recalled missing his tenth year physical. COMPLETELY missing it… but I thought, that was ok. I mean, no mother can be completely perfect, right?
shots5 I called to make an appointment. I apologized to the appointment maker for missing his 10 year appointment. She didn’t seem to care.  PHEW! I was off the hook!
I told Kaish to be prepared for a shot or 2. He was NOT happy about that. We stopped at my Mom’s for a visit before the Dr. and we read one of his old Berenstain Bear books.
shots7We went to the appointment and I apologized to the Check In girl. Again, she didn’t seem to care that I had missed last year’s appointment! Thank you LORD! : )
We went back to the room to wait. I was feeling so relieved about his missed appointment. It could happen to ANY mother, right?shots9But then the nurse came in. The same nurse Kaish has had since he was an itty bitty baby. She told me she hadn’t seen us in a LONG time. She seemed a little ticked. She was loving towards Kaish but definitely giving me the evil eye.shots6   I decided to spring into remorseful mode.
‘Oh, Nurse BJ, I am so terribly sorry we missed Kaishon’s 10 year old check up. It was on our calendar and for some reason January was crazy busy and we just never got around to it. I feel terrible. Yadda. Yadda. Yadda.’shots3She looked at me with disdain and said , “Well, that explains the 10 year old check up. What about his 8 and 9 year old check up?”
shots1I know! Did you just scream? I am the WORST mother in America. I didn’t just miss 1 year. I missed 3 years worth of checkups….
I was horrified. I have no idea how it happened. I am terribly ashamed of my mothering… Isn’t that like Rule #1 in the parenting handbook? Take your kid to a physical every year?  Are you disowning me?shotsPoor little Kaish had to get 4 shots.  He wasn’t happy!
Hopefully that will be the VERY last mistake of my mothering career : ) I am definitely counting on it.shots2
So, there you go. That is our week in a nutshell. Lots of fails and a few shots…

My friend, Becky wanted to do an interview with me. I know. I know. You read all the details of my life [and then some] almost every day… but, if you would like to know more about me and my photography, well, then, scoot over to Farmgirl Paints.
I am super nervous.

I don't think I did the 10 year check up either...yikes and they needed SHOTS! Holy cow. I better get on that. She turns 11 next week.

Thank you so much for letting me interview YOU. Whenever I read your interviews I always wonder the same questions that you are asking. I finally got them answered and it's on my blog...YAY:) Don't be nervous silly girl.

You are such a terrible Mother, but because you are so funny I'm not going to disown you. I bet Kaishon will keep you too! :)

You're lucky your local DSS doesn't read this, right? Right? I mean your local DSS person doesn't read this, right???? Hahahaaaa! ;)

No biggie! As long as you know he's healthy and growing well, things should be A-OK!

Boo has missed a few and Emma is a few months late on this years. I hate taking them to the doctor when they aren't sick.

They look good here is $50 bucks. Thanks!

Sarah said...

Yes. Disowning you for sure. Because you are, like, the worst mother in America. NOT!! But that was hilarious -- I actually busted out laughing :)

Can't wait to read the interview!

Unknown Mami said...

Is it terrible that I am laughing hysterically?

*Jess* said...

Our insurance doesn't pay for Well Baby check-ups, so my kids stopped having them when they turned a year old! And we don't vaccinate, so there's no reason to go to the doctor unless we are sick!

Shey said...

OMG becky you are so funny! LOL Now I'm feeling like the worst mother in America because I don't even remember when his last check-up was! =P he has all his shots but he hasn't had a yearly check-up in a long time. =P

oh i imagine it wont be the last...but that is ok...ugh on 4 shots...i hate needles...

Love your pictures!! I have had a blog since Jan 4th and am not a picture taker but you're making me think maybe I oughtta be!

I came here from Becky's blog. My kids got all their shots but I don't take them to the doc unless they're sick, so I certainly don't think you're a terrible mom!

I'm a crappy mom x 2.

My kids and yearly checkups? Hmm.

I think we stopped when they were 9 and 3?

They're now 23 and 17.

So far, so good.

Of course I fail to get my yearly checkups too.

great interview, great photography!

and when you talked about not opening up a photography business just because you have a nice camera, i had to say amen. we had a bad experience with a "photographer." you would've said OH NO big time.

your son is precious.

i heart your heart.

Tracy P. said...

What's a check up? I have no idea.

Grace said...

Well he has them now and that is all that is important. I'm sure you've got more 'Atta Girl' points to make up for these few over sight right?

lifebythecreek said...

Whew. I feel better now. I do. Because Adam's appointment keeps slipping farther and farther from his birthday every year. He was born in February, and you can't make the appointment at anything less than 365 days. So it slipped a day or two during those first few years, and then a month, and then more, and now it's sometime in the summer. LATE summer. And if it weren't for Scouts and needing a physical for camp every year? I think we would be in the very same boat as you. :<) We can be bad mommas together, OK? We do have good hearts... that counts, right?
Going now to check out your interview...

Well, they are certainly no fun, so I can totally understand your missing them. I still hate shots! LOVE these sweet captures, tho!!

HA HA HA HA HA .... I've done that before... with 4 kids, sometimes, it's just hard to remember.

Would it make you better if I told you truthfully, that in the UK annual checkups for school-age kids do not exist, we just take them when they are sick or when we get the call-up for jabs? The only developmental check-ups are in their first year of life as far as I can remember and one just before they start school. So you haven't done anything less than the millions of mums over here!

In Finland the same as in UK as Belinda writes.
So now you can relax. You're normal! :)
Have a great week ahead!

Love that second last pic, the look on his face is priceless!

I never took any of my kids to the doctor for a check-up after their 6 week one.

We go when a vaccination is due or if they're sick, that's it. And it's not to save money, our doctor's appointments are covered in full by Medicare, the Australian public health care system.

We did go to the early childhood nurse fairly regularly for developmental checks, also free, up until my oldest was about 6, but then I stopped for all of them, didn't see the need.

Sharon said...

Well aren't you the popular one! I can't wait to check out your newest interview. I'm curious about something. Does this mean that your incredibly handsome boy has not been SICK in 3 years and not needed to see the Dr. for anything else? Because surely they would have reminded you had you been there for a sick visit ! I don't think you are bad one bit. So how much did he grow? ; )

sheila said...

Don't beat yourself up, we all do it! In fact, when I take my daughter this year, she'll have missed two physicals. I guess were lucky we've got healthy babes, huh?

I was just going to say exactly what Sharon said.... if you have not been to the dr with Kaishon in three years that is definitely something to be celebrated! You are keeping him SUPER HEALTHY!!

BTW, you are not the only momma missing those well check ups. I am long overdue for Sarah and was for Nick too until I realized he was due for shots and I had to get him in. For some reason those well visits always fall off the radar screem. Too busy I guess...... I know, so bad of me.

Love the pics of him with the Bernstein Bears book. Sarah is just geting into the Bernstein Bears:)

Enjoy your Sunday and all the snow....UGH!

Hmmm... I'm kind of wondering when I last took my kids to the doctors. Can't say that I remember! But I'm sure they're all up to date on everything... I think. Dang. I'm going to go call the doctor.

What a bad mom, you are! ;-)

I know exactly how it happened - the years are FLYING by at warp speed - so it's completely understandable.

I love the story and pictures for today's post. And his hair! Admirable! I have a nephew whose Sicilian ancestry gave him hair like in the pics but he will NOT listen to his aunt and let it grow out.

Oh Becky.....it happens to all of us....obviously he is healthy!!!!! I was not loving our paediatrician, so Lily is just having her 1st and 2nd yearly check-ups with my wonderful Doctor in March.....no reason I couldn't have booked these with my Doctor earlier.....

Amanda said...

LOL! I had a feeling that is where the story was going :) Well, in my opinion, if that is the worst of your parenting I am nominating you for mother of the year!!

Tara R. said...

We are suppose to take them to a check-up every year? Oops. I'm not winning Mother of the Year either then.

I'm with the others, if you didn't NEED to take Kaishon to the doctor in 3 years, he must have been doing pretty well.

myrelish said...

Awesome photos, the perfect distraction from the 'truth'! This post reminded me that my guys are many moons (years really) past their last shots that I don't have the guts to get them done. I wish we had 'well children' checkups here, perhaps then I would be a little more up to date.

TechnoBabe said...

Never heard of such a thing, an annual checkup for kids. That goes to show I was in the Bad Mother Club too. And heck, my kids turned out great. So don't worry. And a couple shots at one time is really better than one at a time anyway.

Adoption of Jane said...

Eh... don't be too hard on yourself! I think its awesome that he has been well enough to be able to forget! I go to at least 5 doctors appts a month so lets trade ;)

4 is not to bad don't let them poke more than that in him though. I am not some crazy anti-vax mom but I will say doubling up on shots is dangerous and I've noticed that is usually the case in Autism moms whose kids regress after shots (like mine). But not trying to scare you Kaishon is older which is good so he's got that strong healthy immune system. Plus the warrior can go years in between appts hahaha! But just a note for mama's with younger kids.

(hope that comment didn't bring out the Autism infighting fanatics... if it did.. oh well better your page then mine hahaha! j/k)

i am fairly certain i only remember to do emma's checkups because her pediatrician sends reminders. and lucy's? because i schedule the next appointment each time i go in to the pediatrician - then, they call me the day before to remind me. you are not alone.

you are definitely not a bad mother. he's healthy and his teeth are clean (oh yeah, haven't taken my almost 4-year old to the dentist, yet!) and he is just fine.

Heather said...

I have an 11 year check up and a 9 year check up coming up (for my kids not me). I have to confess that I keep on getting later and later into the year with them, it seems inevitable that at some point they will miss them.
The one reason I do like them. Is becuase my children are so fabulously healthy (totally nothing to do with me, I don't do organic or make them take vitamins or anything) that I always get lots of praise.
I am totally selfish!
Obviously Kaishon looks amazing and has not suffered too much because of your "parenting fail"!

Annie said...

You know, the shots come at the 11 yr old check up no matter what so if you missed the others, I say, no biggie! He would have gotten the shots at his 11 yr ck up anyway, whether you had made those other check ups or not!!! I know I am constantly berating myself for some such mothering mistake that I am certain will scar my kids for life!!! LOL! I don't think it scars them, just makes them stronger!!! Hehe!

Busy Bee Suz said...

I don't recall reading that they HAD to go every year. Only when they are sick...or when they are due for immunizations. Right?
You are fab. He is fab. All is good.

Oh, Becky. Kaish is healthy (and more importantly, happy!), so don't beat yourself up too much. :)

We have all the shots taken care of up to preschool, but we're lucky that J's school takes care of the follow-on compulsory shots every year... or I might miss those, too!

You're totally awesome.

Oh thats too funny, poor kid! Well I lost one of my daughters shot records and when she was going into 3rd grade they said she needed a 2nd MMR shot, I couldn't believe I missed one but I had them give it to her so she could attend school. I found the missing record a week later. I felt terrible she had to have an unecessary vaccine, especially that one! Oh and we had a few bats in our home and I freaked and made us all get rabies shots because we thought our cat might have been bit and he was missing his 2nd rabies shot.... oh man maybe I am the terrible mother, ha! Thanks for the nice comments on my blog. You have a great week too!

The good news is that he didn't even need the doc right? :)

Rachel said...

Oh you! My first thought was - how blessed to not *need* the doctor before then! :)

It certainly does not make you a bad mom. If you want to see what THAT feels like, try having the nurse chew you out *every visit* for refusing the varicella vaccination, hee hee!

Truth be told, Kaish would probably rather have 4 shots at once, rather than on 4 different days??? eek!

Skeller said...

well, for one, I'm glad I'm in good company. I think in the last 8 years that I've been in SoCal, each boy has had 1 check-up. I'm kinda appointment-phobic I think; so they only see the doc when they absolutely NEED to. :-} Sign me up for the non-Mother-of-the-year award...

Boy, do I feel better now... after reading the first sentence, I was like "Holy cow... when DID my kids have a check up?" Honestly, they're so healthy, and since our health insurance doesn't cover well child visits, we really don't go for annual visits. I think the last time we did a well child visit was the last "round" of vaccinations at age 11. Other than that, they just go to the ped when they're sick, which is almost never. Thank the Good Lord for HEALTHY children!

So, your status as PA's coolest and bestest ever mom remains INTACT!

Sorry Becky, I had to laugh a bit too but not for the same reasons as most everyone else. I'm laughing because if you have a dog, at least where I live, you can't get away with not having the yearly checkups and shots. If you miss, you have to pay animal control a fine! Hugs!
