The Surprise

When we moved into our house three years and six months ago, the builders said,

‘Don’t paint for one year because of nail pops.’

Gary believes they said 10 years.

I am not even kidding.

So, anyway, we have not painted.

I threw a few things up on the walls.

I bought a few rugs.

The house looks nice.

Simple and nice.

White. Very white.

Too white.

I am not a fan of white…

But any way,

recently I was reading a real life friend from college’s blog

and she mentioned (and showed) a room re-do she did for her daughters birthday.

I thought it was brilliant.

What a great idea.

I thought I would do that for Kaish for his Birthday

in January…clean house 018

and then, like ten seconds later,

I remembered my motto for life.

You know, the ‘life is short’ motto?

So, I decided we would do it pronto.

I called my Mama, and my sister, and Juan.

I didn’t have to call far for Juan since he lives with us.clean house 017

He told me to stop yelling (!)

and then he told me ‘of course i love to help.’

He is still working on his English.

My Mom and sister were excited too.clean house 016

Betsy, who rivals me in abundant enthusiasm and impulse..

came over within one hour so we could go to Ross’ and Lowe’s.

We decided on an animal theme since Kaish loves animals.

It was top secret.

We drew up designs and poured over ideas,

and 4 days later, as soon as Kaish left for school,

the crew arrived.

My Mom and Sister and Juan were fantastic workers.kaishons room7

Baby Brooke and Levi?

Not so much, but they sure were cute, so we gave them a TV to watch and lots of kisses.kaishons room

When Kaish came home from school, I was a little nervous.kaishons room3

I mean, his favorite color is orange, and there wasn’t a whole lot of orange to be found….newroom

but when he opened the door,

well, he cried.     kaishons room6 kaishons room5    And that pretty much made me cry too.kaishons room8

We could have waited.kaishons room4

I mean, January isn’t too far off,

and really, it would have made more sense financially to wait.newroom1

But, you know what?room

Life is short.newroom4

It was one of the best decisions I ever made.newroom5

Making Kaish feel special and wonderful on a regular day…2010-10-12 19.26.18 (2)

well, what could be better than that?newroom3

Priceless.newroom6

P.S. His TV is only for DVD's which he is allowed to watch on Saturday night while Gary and I watch a movie from 8:30-10:30 : )
Just in case anyone has a FIT that my child has a tv in his room : )
It isn't connected to anything but the DVD player.

I love this! How great are his expressions of surprise and delight and gratitude? He is one special kid and you sure made him feel like it.

Totally reminds me of my grandma - we just threw a SURPRISE 80th birthday party for her (well, the party was the surprise, not the turning 80 part) - and I love how much fun she had. She totally rocks 80, and has always been one of those "seize the moment" women... use the good china, today is special enough. Love that motto!

You always present us with such talented photographers. Thank you for sharing them with us Becky. About my son I have to be honest, your post about bullying was a wake-up call, you see I had tried many times to stop my son's bullying but many times the bullying would only stop for a while and then it would soon start again. The last time I spoke up it took a few days and a few emails to teachers to get it taken care of because the AP didn't do much. So I had started giving up on speaking up because nothing happened, but when I read that post about Kaish it gave me the little push to go again and speak up, I felt so bad because I thought that again, no one would do anything, that day the principal was not there (the last time I wasn't allowed to talk to the principal)but I left a note and the next day he called me and he said he would put an end to it. After that my son has not been bullied anymore, I'm so happy for this but still everyday I pray that God protects him and all the children who are being hurt by bullies. So thank you dear Becky! I hope that Kaish is doing good too, I also keep him in my prayers when I drop off my son at school. Everytime I pray for them. =)

Oh my gosh! How wonderful that you went to such lengths to make an ordinary day a beautiful surprise! Kaish looked sooo happy! And that's what counts, afterall. Life *is* short so, there's no better time than the present to show someone how much you care. And, love the makeover :-)
