Black + White

I read a phenomenal magazine about black + white photography at Borders on Saturday night.

(Yep,  Saturday night.

Don’t hate me because I have the most spectacular social life in the world…)

Some of my favorite photographers in the issue I read were:

Leslie Alsheimer (human interest)

Kevin Ebi (nature)

James Nader (fashion)

I LOVE B&W's!!!!

I am a color addict. If I never saw them in color, I might be better at embracing b&w. I like other people's when I see them. I LOVE it for when the picture is awesome but out of focus or color that just won't be fixed.

depends on the subject. i love color so much it has to be for a reason. does that make sense? i am photography obsessed right now. getting ready to order my camera tomorrow. been looking for a bag, straps...stuff:) signed up for classes...YAY!!!

Some b&w photos are the most beautiful I've seen...until I find a color print that's equally as lovely! :)

And, honestly, I am jealous of your Saturday night. I haven't spent one out of the house in ages!

My favorite photo of my children is black and white. Taken with a film camera and actual black and white film.

Lots easier now that we've all gone digital.

I'm actually a bit jealous of you... I would love to sit in B&N or Borders and read ALL BY MYSELF! ;-)

I think you know the answer to this one.... LOVE THEM! I think it's amazing how turning a photo into b&w makes them look completely different from the original.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We're gearing up for the crazy month of December. Just the idea of shopping makes my stomach flip!

Hugs,
Grace

I love B&W photos! I've been meaning to try to take more of them (i.e. taking photos with a mind to making them B&W)...but it's hard to cut the color addiction. :) And hanging out in Borders reading fun books? That sounds like a LOT of my Saturday nights....

Black and Whites are awesome, especially if you know how to edit them-- like you do! They bring a wonderful texture and sense of the imagination to their viewing.

Lucky you at the book store on a Saturday night. I'm a little jealous :-)

Color or black and white are like oil paintings or watercolor painting. Different, but both equally beautiful. Your photo is beautiful too.

I do like black & white photos, but I'm still learning about converting them from color. There's an art to getting the contrast right, I think. Your photo is lovely!

I adore black and white photos! I got on a kick a couple of years ago when I took an absolutely gorgeous photo of the Tongginator and her two best friends. Only the Tongginator was wearing a red dress and the twins were in a pink that clashed awfully with the red. Hence the black and white. And I keep going back to it. Love your shot!

April said...

Yes...black and white photos are some of my favorites! What a cute family photo you shared! :)

I do love black and white (and sepia, too). My favorite action for B/W is Florabella's B/W Mink; I love to get a rich, minky sepia tone. It looks lovely in a nice wooden frame with a cream mat. As for THIS particular picture, I absolutely ADORE it in black and white. You converted it beautifully, with just the right amount of contrast. It's crisp and clear without being too overdone. Such a sweet family, even the doggie! Well done, dear one....

oh fab shot- I love how all the foliage creates a nice texture that your eyes are drawn to, the family in the middle literally pops out of the scene. I don't do many b&w's unless something really calls for it, so this week was a little more difficult for me :-)

I love B&W and I love that you can use digital technology to look at a photo in color and sepia and B&W so it's possible to learn to appreciate the difference in emphasis and feel.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. The fish dish is fantastic - try it. And Thanksgiving turned out ok. We finally kicked into gear and managed to get it all done. But it really is so much work - 4 days of cooking in order to not cook all day on Turkey Day. But it was a great day with family.

I do love B & W photos, but ever since my son was born, it's hard to commit to a B & W family photo because I love the color of his hair! Red!

Elizabeth said...

Yes, I do...love this one - it's hard to get a family plus a dog; even the dog appears to be smiling!

Michelle said...

Yes, I LOVE B&W's! I am a high contrast kind of girl so B&W's make me so happy =)

Better to engage in your passion of photography on a Saturday night than to wake up with a hangover Sunday morning. :)

Black and white almost seems unique because most photos are in color, so I really appreciate the beauty of black and white when I see it.

LOL - your social life sounds a lot like mine these days : )

This photo is stunning Becky. You are getting so good!!!

That is actually a PERFECT Saturday night to me. Borders, with a coffee or hot tea, and a stack of photography books or cookbooks (with a lot of pictures). I don't mind at all that my social life is lacking. ;o)

I have always loved black and white photos. I feel blessed that my mom took a photography class when I was about 2 or 3 years old and took endless black and white pictures during that time period. I treasure them. :)
Love the photo you took. The grass adds so much texture!

Jabacue said...

Yes I do. Used to do a lot of B/W but have gotten away from it for no reason at all. This will push me back. Thanks.

I think I actually like black and white photographs more than color. For me, I just see more emotion in a black & white photo.

I LOVE B&W photography. I think it takes away all the distraction and makes your eye focus on what is really important...what you're really trying to capture...the people or the place.

Kim said...

I'm particularly drawn to black and white pictures for some reason. I always chose those over color. And, I'm drawn to people that peruse a bookstore on a Saturday night :-)
