Photographer Interview: Madeline Cedeno of the Maddy Chronicles

I can not wait to introduce you to one of my new favorite photographers: Maddy.
 maddy 20

When I asked Maddy if I could interview her,
she didn’t think she was good enough.
So I have to start this post with a lecture.

maddy 2

This lecture is for you Maddy,
and for you, Drew.
And for my friend Catherine.
maddy 3
And for every other photographer out there that keeps saying they are ‘not good enough.’
You need to stop it right this second.
You are learning.
You are growing with every click! maddy 1
Seriously.
Keep clickin’

maddy 21

Look, even this guy thinks so : ).
End of lecture.
Proceed to fun interview with Maddylicious!

How do you feel being surrounded by Mommy bloggers with loads and loads of kid pictures and stories?

maddy 3            I actually love it! I have three nieces and two nephews, so I adore spending time and taking pictures of the little ones.

maddy 9And of course, I look forward to the day when I can have a little munchkin of my own. So I enjoy reading the daily tales of joy (and woes) of motherhood – it’s like research!maddy 12
Who is your favorite person to take pictures of right now?maddy 2

Oh man!! That’s a tough one! I love taking pictures of anyone who will let me, but I guess I would have to say my one-year-old nephew Tyler. He’s got the biggest eyes and the cutest smile! Plus, he’s still at an age where he doesn’t run away from the camera, like my three year- old nephew! I'm still trying to figure out a way to bribe him to stay put for pictures ;o)
 maddy 3

What other hobbies do you enjoy?
 maddy 15
Is there anything else besides blogging and photography? Lol! I only kid! Whenever I can peel myself away from the computer, I love to read and watch trashy reality TV…is that considered a hobby?maddy 16

What made you get into photography?
  maddy 5

Ironically, the reason I picked up photography is because I needed a “hobby”. Life was starting to get very stressful and I wanted a creative outlet. I started blogging and taking pictures with my point-and-shoot, but after visiting so many beautiful photography blogs, and inspired by my real friend Dita, I knew I wanted to step up my photography game.
 maddy 8
Was it love at first click?
When I bought my first DSLR on Dec 27th 2009  (I remember the day!!!) with some extra Christmas cash, I thought it was going to be simply for blogging purposes. I was perfectly fine with shooting in Auto back then. But then I started taking some “Getting to Know Your Camera” classes, and then it dawned on me how much I really enjoyed the science and art of photography!
 maddy 4
And I couldn’t wait to practice, practice, practice! A Photoshop class in April sealed the deal for me. I’ve always been pretty tech savvy, so Photoshop was right up my ally! For me, it’s like my very own digital coloring book! Every day I learn something new about photography and/or editing…and I LOVE it!!maddy 13
What is your favorite summertime drink?

I’m usually a whisky sour girl. But in the summer, I like to trade it in for a nice margarita on the rocks or an ice-cold beer.
 maddy 5

Do your friends like to model for you?
 maddy 5

Lol! Oh not at all! They get a bit annoyed that the camera goes wherever I go, but they are also very encouraging! My friends are brutally honest (to a fault!), so when they say I’m really improving with my photography skills, I know it’s a genuine compliment.
 maddy 11
How did you come up with the cigarette glasses?
(I loved that by the way)maddy 7
I didn’t! Those were Lady Gaga inspired sunglasses that my friend designed as part of his costume for the Monster Ball concert we attended in July. He did an amazing job and they were so cool, everyone wanted a picture with him at the concert! And of course, I had first dibs on the photos ;o)maddy 6

When you become a famous photographer, because I KNOW that you will someday Maddy, what would your dream assignment be?
 maddy 18

I don’t know about all that, but I would LOVE to be a photographer for Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic or a similar publication! That would combine my two favorite things ever: photography and traveling the world!
 maddy 19

What was the last movie you went to see?
 maddy 14

Inception!! Anyone that reads my blog knows how much I adore Leonardo DiCaprio! So it’s no surprise I went to see this one on opening day!
maddy 1
If your husband had to pick one word to describe you, what would it be?

I was stuck on this one, so I decided to ask the hubby for his responses and he came up with…. demanding! I was hoping for something a little more “sugary and sweet”, but it is what it is. Though I wouldn’t consider being demanding a bad thing! I’m just a girl that knows what I want and tries not to settle for less!
 maddy 1

What made you decide to be a MAC girl?

I’m a sucker for pretty things…. and the MAC is oh so pretty and shiny! But now that I made the switch, I don’t know how I managed without it!
 maddy 2

Are you reading any good books right now? Do tell! Or tell me about the fall TV lineup that you are excited about?
I’ve hit a bit of a reading slump lately, but the fall TV lineup is coming up and I’m so ready for it! I watch way too many shows to list here; it’s sort of embarrassing! But I’m really excited for Dexter, Grey’s Anatomy (especially after that crazy finale!) and I’m a sucker for Dancing with the Stars! But I’m all about True Blood these days!maddy 4
What is your dream lens?
I’m not sure if I have a dream lens yet. Everyone says I need to get the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, but I’ve never tried it, so I can’t say. Though I love my nifty fifty (Nikon 50mm f/1.8), I’m getting more and more excited about my Sigma 70-300mm. maddy 4
I love that it’s a zoom lens with great macro capabilities! It may not be a fancy, schmanzy lens, but it has served me well! So many of my favorite photos have been taken with this one!
 maddy 2
Additional thoughts you MUST share….maddy 10

For any aspiring photographers, don’t let all the insanely amazing photography out there get you down. I know I played the comparison game for a bit. There are so many talented photographers, but they all had to start somewhere…in my shoes…. figuring out how to make the leap from auto to manual. Whenever I have those days when I feel like I’m not a good enough (because let's face it, we are all our harshest critics), I see how far I’ve come on this journey! There’s still plenty of room for improvement…. but I’ve finally made the leap out of Auto ;o)

Maddy!! I have had my DSLR for three years and am not nearly as good as you!! Your photos are fun! They pop! AND you are so there as far as being able to start charging for your works of art.

I think I'll learn a thing or two from you, and from Becky of course:)

Good luck and if you are ever in the Philly area I could use some one-on-one tutorials with Photoshop!

How on earth did she think her photos were not good enough, ahh yes, I understand we are all our own harshest critic, but Maddy I have two words for you. BREATH TAKING!

I love that you feature a photographer each week, I am new to the blog so I am not sure if this is a regular theme, but it totally should be. LOVE IT!

HOLY SMOKES!!! Like, seriously, HOLY SMOKES! GIRLFRIEND! WOW! Her photography is A*MAZING! I love that she photographs the mundane: take those kisses for instance: CANDY IN A BOWL....and yet LOOK at how much depth that photo has! She took the ordinary and made it EXTRA*ORDINARY! The flip flops in the sand...something so everyday, and yet that photo DRAWS you in and wants to know MORE about the photo.

OK, I am completely INSPIRED!

I totally understand second guessing yourself. I STILL do that. I see all these photographers in my area who havent done this as long, doesn't have nearly the knowledge I've gained, and yet they are ROLLING in the clients. All's quiet on my front, so I second guess.

But in the meantime, God is able to use me and my camera for things for His kingdom, and NOT for money. Maybe that's the lesson He's trying to teach me: I'm here for MORE than just money. LOL

LWK, I don't even know your name but you are always so kind and about the comment you left, don't give up! I started walking first, because I wanted to be out of the house (too much trouble at home) so I walked once a week and then I liked it and I walked twice the next week. Rather than being exersice I thought of it as a time for me, no running, I stopped whenever I wanted, there was no finish line I had to achieve, slowly the pounds started to come off. I think you can do this, believe me I struggled with weight myself. You are such an inspiration with your pictures to others, you are great and you are beautiful, beauty is not a size. God made you beautiful =)
Hugs! God bless you!
