Photographer Interview: Erin Wheeler

This photographer makes lovely pictures.   erin 3  Exquisite. Outstanding. Notable.erin 1

I could stay at her site for 2 hours easily.erin 2

I would pick looking at her pictures over

any of the Real Housewives episodes.erin 4

That is saying a lot.

You are going to absolutely love this girl.erin 5

Get ready to smile over and over again.

erin 12       Please allow me to introduce, Erin Wheeler.erin 19  When did you first fall in love with taking pictures? erin 21

Around the time my second daughter was born I received my first digital camera.

Tell me a little about your photography journey.

erin 27I loved taking pictures but nothing really more than snapshots. Then around the time I was pregnant with my third I decided to ditch both of my cheapie digital cameras and bought my first digital SLR. erin 28I was so impressed my new big camera that I decided I wanted to start taking noteworthy photos. I ordered photography books, dvds and registered to a few online forums. From there I think I came obsessed and I was taking pictures every single day to get better. I wanted to capture every moment…freeze everything in time. Photography became a huge part of my life. Now I can’t even imagine my life without a camera by my side.erin 15

Is pink the prominent color of clothing in your house?

Yes, pretty much here with 3 girls you have no problem finding a princess outfit! erin 14

Does your husband love all the pink

and girly-ness in the house?

erin 13

Yes, he is pretty use to it all now…. Okay, okay-- confession is that my youngest is a little bit of a tomboy…erin 4you would never really know it from my pictures though.

We can’t ever get her to play with the girlie stuff. erin 10She prefers cars, trucks, fake bugs and digging in the dirt but she still insists on wearing dresses and princess shoes everyday. So my hubby isn’t too bad off.

What ages are the girls right now?

The girls are 12,8, and 3…growing up way to fast!

How do you come up with shoot ideas?erin 18

I get a lot of inspiration from flickr, other photographers, magazines, the area I live in and really just my girls. I usually have something pictured in my head for days before we go out on a shoot. erin 11

How many pictures do you shoot in an average week?erin 6

I would say at least 30+

Do you ever think about going into business? erin 2

Yes, I do quite often! I am actually building up my portfolio and thinking of starting a very small business soon. I had my first newborn shoot last month and later this month I am actually shooting my first wedding (as a second shooter of course)!erin 17

What stops you?

The only thing that every stops me is the fear over working myself to the point that it is not fun anymore. Hopefully that will never happen. I love what I do and want to keep on loving it! erin 1

How would your daughters describe you to someone in three words?erin 22

Well since all three of them are around I asked each of them. Here are their answers: friendly, creative, a girl (that’s my 3 yr old—tell it like it is!)

Describe a perfect weekend day. Tell me all the details!erin 24

Well I would love to wake up to some breakfast in bed—I never had that happen but a girl can dream! I would love to spend the day with my family somewhere near the water…either a lake or the beach but far far away from crowds…just us and the water. I would love to spend the day swimming, boating and relaxing. Then later in the evening maybe some butterfly catching in field near by….lots of picture taking of course. Later that night I would love to toast marshmallows over a campfire (think smores!). Definitely just being away with my family and from all the stress in the world is a perfect day for me!erin 16

Where is your favorite place to get the girls pretty clothes? erin 31

I would say my #1 place is Matilda Jane. I love the way their clothes are so unique, different and photograph so well. I also love Gap, Crewcuts, Boden….really it doesn’t matter what the label says…cute and unusual and I love it!

What do you like better: Cooking dinner or cleaning the kitchen?

Hands down cooking! My hubby has no clue how to cook and I actually enjoy it a lot. It works out well though…I cook and he does the dishes!

What is the best dinner you make?erin 26

Tortilla soup with a side of quesadillas. Easy to make and super yummy!

How long have you been on flickr?

I have been on flickr for about a year and half now. I love it—I have learned soo much and there is so much amazing inspiration there.erin 25

Do you have your photography hung in every room of your house? erin 29

Sadly no! But that will change shortly. I think my main problem is I can’t decide what to hang where and my new favorite photo will vary week to week. But I finally did buckle down and order a bunch of big photos and they are just waiting to be hung!

Where do you get your pictures developed?erin 30

Miller’s Lab. They are fabulous! I have tried a few different places but their quality is just amazing. I just love them!

What other creative things do you have?erin 23

I love to make hair accessories. I make a lot of the girls headbands. I have a craft room full of fabrics, ribbons, feathers and flowers. I also make jewelry time to time. When I get a creative itch I love to go in there a make a big mess!     erin 32

I'm looking for some new gear and was wondering (not to tell you how to do your job) if you could see what kind of lenses and such your photographers use. I love them because they are all so unique and wonderful.

First off, your daughters are absolutely GORGEOUS! I love the way you dress them and the first shots of this post look like magazine ads.

I LOVE your editing and the softness of your photos. It makes everything seem so dreamy and surreal. I want to jump into those shots and spend some time there. Your perfect day sounds just like mine. Can I join you?

Definitely consider going pro. I think you'd be very successful and if you lived anywhere near me I'd hire you to shoot my boys. Do you live near me?

I have a question for the photog: when will this over-saturation during post-production craziness/fad END? So we may go BACK to natural looking colors? Will we look back at these pix and say: wow: what does everything look so NEON BRIGHT? 10 years from now?
