Joyful Jayla

My best friend Jen moved away-
and took my girl models with her.
I miss them so much.
Thank goodness my friend Tiffany
shared her little girl with me this weekend.
Isn’t she the sweetest?

I have an important question for you this week.
Put your thinking cap on, k?
I was reading an informative post at MCP Actions today
regarding props and over used poses…
and pretty much,
I do all of those things.
So I was wondering if you could think of some other ideas.atiffany 034 part 2
I know you all are WAY more creative than me,
so bring it on!
Thanks a million ba jillion!

No suggestions, but can I say I just love the photo above the "life's not fair" quote? Such a great pout.

Oh Becky, how precious. I don't think your props are overused. You use what works to get the creative emotions into action.
I just love the shot with the balloons around her wrist.

Marvelous shots of such a precious little girl and what an expressive face! I don't think your props are overused either. Like Photowannabe wrote, we all use what works for us! Hope you're having a great week, Becky! Hugs to you and Kaishon!

Props aren't overused, but taking an everyday shot that turns out special is perhaps more rewarding? I dunno though... these are awfully cute!

Wonderful, wonderful.... I think that little face would look great in watercolor!

Loved your post, and your comments on mine!

She is precious! I bet you that she will be loaned to you anytime if you always give her mom precious photos like these! I love the one by the building with all the balloons! :)

Thanks for asking about my Hubby. He is doing better but it will take a long time for the pain to go away. The recliner has become his bed for the time being. Mostly we are dissappointed about not going on the mission trip to Mexico in 2 days. Too soon, too long a drive down there (14 hours in a truck) and too difficult to sleep on a camp cot. I feel I need to stay home too. Much too long for me to be gone (9 days) when he isn't up to par.
Thanks for caring and I loved coming back and looking at these amazing darling photos.

She is a DOLL! I am so jealous that you have access to kids that don't immediately turn and run or stick their fingers in their noses as soon as they see a camera!

Beautiful, just beautiful!

She's very cute and the dress is really lovely.

I have to say everything you're doing/using looks amazing to me. I always love your photos. I wouldn't change a thing. BTW, she is one adorable model!

Balloons may be an overused prop but your photo took me straight to the little girls lovely face...so much for fads!

Her face is so expressive of all the emotions that go with play.

she is so beautiful with a so innocent smiles...:)

Amazing! I love the balloon in front of the garage, wonderful!

lifebythecreek said...

holy moly, chickie!!!! I love the face shot... such a beautiful girl, such gorgeous eyes, such a talented photographer! And all of them with her holding the balloons, and the sweet smile as she looks away. But her scowl is what brings the giggle out for me... how can a kid holding a fistfull of balloons look so darn serious? Those are wonderful. And you do what works for YOU... don't worry about what someone else does or thinks, or whether they think it's a fad or not. It's your life; capture it your way....

Beautiful pictures, and my favorite is the final shot of her laughing.

Suggestions? I don't really have any. Sometimes I like to see an unusual object or a usual object used in an unusual way. Well, that's nice and vague of me isn't it. Have to put on my thinking cap to come up with a good example.

Dimple said...

I don't "do" portraits, usually, so I have no specific suggestions. However, if I see something I like I try to picture it. The camera doesn't ever see what I see, and I must compose and/or edit carefully. I also dislike seeing the same thing repeatedly, and strive for a unique perspective.
I like your portraits in this post, I think you just need to be yourself, and let your subjects be themselves. Then be ruthless with your cropping!
Thanks for the visit!

What an absolute doll. What a great friend you are to give Jayla's mama such a beautiful photo gift.

I love what you do. You are extremely talented. Sometimes, you have to carve your own style even if it isn't someone else's. Do what feels challenging, yet comfortable.

Okay, I am NOT more creative than you-I have no idea!
I love all those pictures, and quotes...especially the last quote!
Have a great day!

Personally, I think you are doing just fine if you love the way you are doing things. The same prop with another model and another photographer has a different look/feel to it anyway.
And, what's wrong with some sort of continuity in life anyway? : )
If you want to use my image for a background please give me photo credit and link to my site. Thanks!!! And then, 'show' me what you did as I'd love to see the end result!

First I got lost in this wee angel's face. Then I got lost in the photos at the linked page. Then I got lost in a phone call. I'm back to say .. who cares if some of them are cliché? Photograph what you think is interesting. If you put your own heart into it, it will be original with your own special touch. As they always are.

Props? You don't use props do you? I think you are wrong here....

THat little angel is angelic.
I am still mas at Jen for moving. Aren't you? I miss the models too.

tilt your camera more...like in the I heart photos challenge this week. Lay on the ground and shoot up at your model. or look down at them. You do take wonderful pictures!

Cecily R said...

YOu always have the best quotes to go with the best pictures (LOVE the one by Emily Dickenson). Your model is adorable!!!

About your question, I don't know. it's all so subjective. If you like the poses you do and the people you're shooting like them, they they are perfect. One thing I've learne is that my best shots come out of unposed, caught moments. I love that kind of shot.

Wanda said...

How adorable is she? I wouldn't change a thing.

Happy Wednesday to you!!

So sweet! What a happy little girl! I love those quotes, too, especially the Emily Dickinson one. (She's one of my favorite poets)

These shots are beautiful! I guess it helps that the little girl is beautiful too!! I don't think your props are over used. My favorite thing to do with kids this age is to just follow them around and get them in a natural state instead of making them mad trying to get them to pose. Great job!!!

She is a DOLL! I love your shots...if you ask me I think you do VERY well with all your shots and your subjects couldn't be sweeter!

Gorgeous girl! Really lovely :) The best shots with kids, in my opinion, is to hang back and just let them play. Then you capture them being themselves, and don't get so many cheesy smiles. Looks to me like you did a wonderful job with this little sweetie :)

My suggestion is to try different angels, from above, etc.
Something for stinky feet: try powder in the shoes, there are also inserts that are supposed to helpk with stench.

First of all, what an absolutely beautiful little girl. She looks so wise in some of those photographs, I could sit there and stare for hours.

Okay, on the subject of props, fads, trends, cliches...I think they only start to matter, as in "oh my, how hackneyed that is" when the photographer is relying solely on the prop to give the photograph life. Like the picture of feet, or the wedding rings on a baby's toes.

The portrait is of the individual, that animating spark within a person. The very thing you captured with the little girl above. It doesn't matter if you use props, it's the person in the photo that stands out. Some of those props are quite pretty...and there will always be props in portraits.

Gadzukes, my sister-in-law had one of those sepia toned portraits taken of my godson and nephew, William...dressed in his Christening gown, which is antique...William was asleep in the photographs, and the impact of the shot was ghastly. It looked like the death portraits of old. Scared me silly when I saw it (to be clear, I very obviously did not say to my SIL, "Good lord, he looks dead!") ...but that's a "for instance" on what can go wrong when the emphasis is on the trick, technique or prop, rather than on the face of a person.

It doesn't matter if you use props, you take wonderful pictures of people. I think you look at their faces, and I know the photographs that you take..that's the part I'm drawn to. It's a gift. Props come and go, talent stays.

I don't care what the 'experts' say, if you like a style or a composition, then go for it! That's my opinion. ;)
