What would you say?

What would you say
to your kid's 'play therapist'
after you hand her your $55 an hour payment
and she says-
"Kaishon is such a GREAT player.
We should be able to resolve his issues in
approximately 18-24 months."
Ummmmmmmmm, I was (and still am)
absolutely speechless...
It was that kind of day...
but, I did find out that I am
How nice is that?
Have you checked that blog out yet?
It's a must see : )!

Oh gosh...that would be hard to determine if it's not your line of work and you don't notice progress. I'd go with my gut if I were you.

Congratulations on your award! You are the best!

I'm glad to hear that after a rough day, you got a happy spot at the end. We all had a feeling you must be away from home after all the comments kept pouring in, and we hadn't heard anything from you yet. :) You definitely deserve to be the fan of the week. I doubt there is an iHeartFaces participant who hasn't received a nice comment from you. Enjoy the rest of your day. :)

I would say "play thearapist trying to steal all my money say what?" That is crazy. 18-24 months. That adds up to what? I am sure she has all the $ in her head. LOL
Congrats to on being the fan of the week. How cool are you? Very!

How cool that you are Fan of the Week, you totally deserve it.

As for the play therapist, how often is he supposed to go? Every week? At $55 a session? YIKES!!! I'd hate to see how long she'd think it would take for somebody who isn't a great player.

I also charge my clients $55 per hour but that only because $55 will buy me 11 $5 footlongs at Subway.

Hey Miss FOTW! Wow $55! I think that's a bit much. Do what you gotta do, :). You know best.

$55 is a deal. My plumber charges me $70 an hour and all i get is crack.

For $55 an hour I would schedule Kaishon for drum leasons.

Congrats on being fan of the week!

I am not quite sure what I would say to the therapist.....

Wait, what's a play therapist? I don't understand???
I agree about the award...you're portraits are beautiful!

I'm truly puzzled by your "Anonymous" poster. Two theories: (1) he/she works for Subway's PR department or (2) he/she is a wacky.

Anonymous: fess up...who are you?

Mom on the Run said...

As for the play therapist..is there a resource on the web that would let you know what is the going rate for play therapy and whether the number of sessions/length of time for sessions is accurate or over-the-top.

I agree with other posters, you should go with your gut as to how many sessions/is it working. Good luck with the therapy.

Congrats on being the FOTW! You definitely deserve it! I also love your photos which happen to be great... each and every week!

What does Kaish say about the therapist? Does he enjoy it, have you noticed any changes at all? You really do need to go with your gut. Either stay and see what happens (if you have good feelings about this person) Or try someone else (if you don't have good feelings about this person.)
You will figure it out. You know what is right and wrong for you both. :)
Congrats. I love all your faces.

I am so happy that you were chosen as "Fan of the Week"...I will be visiting that blog more often!

Hmmm...I would probably have to rethink the whole $55 an hour deal. That's outrageous, especially when her only feedback was that Kaishon is a great player! Can't he just play with some buddies, instead? Sorry for being cynical!

Wow...$55 an hour. I think you're the best "play therapist" around...just stick the money in your own pocket and do what you know is best. YOu're an awesome momma!!

Congrats again on FOTW!

Hope you have a fabulous Friday!!

I would shudder to think how long it would take if he wasn't a good player!

Congrats on being the fan of the week! I enjoy reading your comments every week, and looking at your adorable pictures!

I saw your comment. Are we living in a world where the school can mandate how you spend your money and how you care for your child?
So maybe abortion without parental consent was an even bigger power grab?

Cortney said...

Give Kaish my congratulations on being a "great player."

Whaaa? There are play therapists? I'm in the wrong line of work!

Congrats! :)

UMMM....strange? I can't wait to check that site out! I am sure you are fan of the week though! :) Have a wonderful weekend with lots of play time! LOL

hmm. i am suspicious of the $55 play therapy that needs to go on for two more years!

mimi said...

I agree with many of the other posters....first YOU ARE such a supportive cyber friend. I'm so glad to have connected with you. Congrats on the award!!

I say "go with your gut" for sure!! I'm not sure what a play therapist does? Is there a chance it's covered by health insurance?

You seem like such a great, supportive and positive mom--very inspiring!

Well, of course you were fan of the week...you have always been a great encourager. Congratulations!

Contgrats on being Fan of the Week.
Don't know about the play therapist question. Good luck on deciding what to do from here.

KMilty said...

Congrats on "fan of the week"! I always love your photos.

I'm with everyone else...go with your gut. Maybe talk with her and tell her how you're feeling. I think that a person that wants to genuinely help children will work with you (payment plan, price cuts, swapping for another service). That $55 check will get more and more difficult to write each session. And you don't really want bad or negative feelings eating away at you. Life is hard enough as it is. I will keep you in my thougths. Stay strong!

Your son is so lovable! Great photo...love the joy showing on his face. Again, congratulations on being FOTW at I ♥ Faces. You truly deserve it. I always enjoy your comments. :)

I would say "bump that down to 6 months and I'll bump it up to $60/hr and you have yourself a deal." Yikes. What is a play specialist????

Kristen@nosmallthing said...

Any kind of therapy is expensive...I remember paying a $40 copay for my son's physical therapy after his stroke...thankfully that didn't start until we were going only once per month. Because I don't think I could have afforded $160/month at the time.

Whatever the issues, I hope it helps.

And congrats on being fan of the week. That is very cool!

18 - 24 months is a REALLY long time. Without knowing more about the situation, it's difficult to say, but I would ask for a one-on-one meeting wtih this therapist and ask WHERE her estimate is coming from. Might be time to change therapists.

Joe said...

Ok, this is my second attempt. :)

Becky,
55$ is actually quite cheap for a certified play therapist. Many charge upwards of $100. Her time line does seem very long, and to be honest, concerns me a little. Unless there is a history of abuse in his his background, I can see no reason why a Child would need such a long term based therapy.

There is a host of questions I would ask her:
1. What outcomes would she like to see?
2. What theory does she base her therapy on?
3. What does she believe is the presenting problem?
4. Does she believe in short term therapy?
5. If yes, why does she feel this would take so long.

When you first went to see her, there should have been a paper you signed called "informed consent" or some such name. She should have given you a copy of this paper and it may have the answers to most of these questions.

Play therapy is a really powerful tool for change when done well. Email me if you want, there's a lot that you may want to consider about this.
Grace and Peace,
Joe
