My Mom and cell phones

Well, a couple of weeks ago I told you about my Mom and Coach purses.
Today I would like to tell you abouut something I like to call:
Our little Cell Phone Situation!
2 year ago at Christmas time, my Mom, who is seriously one of the Greatest Humans On The Earth, said she wanted a cell phone.

I was going to get her one but my Daddy, who is seriously another one of the Greatest Humans On The Earth, said "Don't get your mother a cell phone. She will Never use it."
I said, "But Daddy, that is ALL she wants."
And he said, "Don't do it."
So I listened : ).
Until a month later on her Birthday.
I went to my cell phone store (AT&T if you are wondering : )
I got her a cute little phone.
Silver and snazzy.
I added her to my plan for $19.99 a month.
I went home and wrapped it up.
I presented it to her and she was SO excited.
Or so I thought.
A few months go by and I notice that I can never reach her via her new cell phone.
I asked her why?
She said, "Oh, honey, I don't take it out of the house with me very much."
"Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Why?
"Well, I never need to call anyone. I am usually with Daddy and he has a phone.
Sometimes I do take it places (in my purse) but I never, ever turn it on."
"Well, have you ever used it?"
"No. I will though. Thank you so much. I love it very much"
Months go by.
Every month the bill looks the same. There are NO calls on the phone.
None.
A year goes by and I do a year end summary at AT&T.
She made 3 calls. 3 calls in one year.
That's crazy, right?
I think I have to take her off my plan.
I asked her the other day if she was ever going to use the phone.
She said, "No. The buttons are too small."

So there you have it.

The buttons are too small. I have been spending $19.99 month for nothing. I should have listened to my Dad : ).

Do you know anyone who doesn't use their cell phone?

What should I get her for her Birthday this year?

I'm sorry, Rebeckah, but I must admit, that's pretty funny! Your mom (and dad) are so cute!!!

LOL! I am laughing with you b/c my inlaws have cell phones but you can never reach them. They either don't have them on or don't have it with them. What are we going to do with them? LOL!

OMG~I just got a cell phone for my mom Saturday. I havent given it to her yet! Maybe this week, but I did get it for 9.99 a month. I will do what you did and look to see her activity!

As for a gift this year?? Cash is just about as popular as its always been! I know I like it =)

My Dad doesn't use his either. It was a gift too - total waste!

One year we gave him a new microwave because his old one was like 10 million years old and you could heat things just as fast in the oven. The new microwave? Sat in his attic for 2 years until the old one completely died.

I like Grammy's idea of a trip. Memories are the best present.

LOL!! that is so funny. It took my mom FOREVER to start using hers. She would go on trips and call me with the hotel number. I would tell her to just "turn o her cell phone" and I could get her anytime. I think both of my parents are finally keeping their phones on!!

Thanks for visiting my blog!!!

Too funny. It took my mom a long time (as in several years) to begin using hers, or even leaving it on :-) but she is pretty good now.

How about one of those huge remotes for the TV with big buttons. LOL What a great story. I used to be that way & my husband said the same thing...now I use it all the time.

Your mom is so adorable! She will use it once you talk your dad into getting rid of their land line. I haven't had a land line in over 5 years. I just had to up my text to 2,000 a month because of all my grandkids and their texting!

How about getting your mom a full body massage and/or facial. That's my favorite gift. Now I treat myself in between gifts.

That is a great story! I love it. I love mom stories.

Oh my heart!!! That is one of the best stories EVER!!!! And I thought we RARELY used our Cell phone...she totally has us beat!!!

my parents have a TRAC FONE...because they are pretty worried about getting out of control with a regular cell phone...that and they live so far out of the world that they get spotty coverage.....

Mom constantly worries when I call on my cell about how many minutes I am using up by calling her. "Let me call you back on my (regular) phone!" she suggests. I've explained it fourteen times, but it just doesn't stick, I guess.

Seriously, aren't we a little young for our parents to be old?

Well this used to be my MIL she is on our plan also. She has now after about 2 years really started using the thing. She has even started TESTING!

I know I should not be laughing but.... Get her a Digital picture frame and put pictures of your family on it. :)

That is too funny. I agree with everyone else - something that creates memories is the best way to go! Too cute!

My mom doesn't have a cell phone and would never use one. My dad has one that he only takes with him when traveling. Then get this ... he only turns it on if he wants to MAKE a call. (Almost never) So no one can call him .... ever.

Generation gap?

That is too funny... and frustrating. My dad was like that before he retired. He never took anything out of the box. We would see the gifts unused/opened in the garage months after it had been given.

For your mom... what about a digital frame or photo key chain. You could load it up before you give it to her.

that is so funny.
Get her one of those oversized giant remote controls I see at walgreens. The buttons are enormous!

Lynette said...

That is hilarious! Must say I have a cell but I hate phones...so it is usually lying somewhere with a lot of missed calls on it.

I can relate as I get older. Have you ever seen these: http://www.jitterbug.com/

Hey, I think it was a really sweet gift you got her. And very generous of you to add her to your plan. Maybe this year, something she can plant in her garden? Does she like roses? I always thought a live rose bush would be an awesome gift. But I am a gardener. Or a day of gardening cleanup by professionals in the spring. Oh my dream!

And yes, I know someone who can never be reached on their cell... u-hum, moi! I forget to charge it or like your mom, I run off and leave it at home. But I can see the buttons, barely and even learned to text.

LOL that's how my grandma is. she can't seem to understand that she can call ANY number from her cell. she thinks she can only call other cell phones. she also can't grasp that we are both verizon so it's free to talk to each other. i've finally given up!
a few gift ideas, this year for christmas, i snuck over to my parents house and "stole" their wedding album. i made new copies of all the pics and made a scrapbook of their life together from dating till now. there was a page devoted to each of us five children and each of the five grandchildren. she cried when she opened it (she never cries!) last year i got her an MP3 player and preloaded it with all the praise music i knew she would love. she's not technilogically savvy (she still has a tape player in her car!) so i filled it with all the new worship music we do at our church off itunes. she listens to it when she walks at night. all she has to do is turn it on LOL and the music is already on there. she'd never figure out how to put it on herself. every time i get music i think she'll like i bring it here and add it.

That is kind of funny, it sounds like one of those things that she thought she would use more, but perhaps is just set in her ways. Can you get her one of those pre-paid phones for when she does need it? But then at least you pay just once and you're not spending every month? Just a thought!

LOL! I bought my Mom one a few years back...she always forgets to bring it with her. And the few times she actually does bring it...she either forgets to turn it on or the battery died!!! She is 73. Is it just that generation? I don't get it!

If my mom were still living, I am positive she & I would've had the exact same experience! I'm sorry you just spent $240 for three phone calls -- ACK!!!

I think, the older we all get, the more resistant to change we are.

Can you get her a manicure/pedicure somewhere? Or wouldn't she use that, either?

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Your Mom's cell phone story is very funny, too cute.

LOL...oh, seriously...this is making me laugh. My granny used to be the same way. She wouldn't turn hers on b/c she thought it would "run up her bill". We finally convinced her that she was only charged when she made a call, then we had to explain to her that she could make ALL the calls she wanted to make for the same low monthly amount! (Shocking, I know!) Finally, a few years down the road, she actually USES her cell phone! BUT she still calls me when she needs to listen to her voicemail☺

Isaiah is into infomercials, so we bought my granny some Aqua Globes last year for her b-day. LOL☺ She loved them!

Oh that is too funny. My mom doesn't have one either. She should for safety reasons but I like the idea there are some people in this world who won't succumb. If I didn't have a child I wouldn't have one.

That is so funny--like my mom who always has hers turned off because she only uses it in emergencies!

I wound go with Grammy's idea too--maybe a high tea somewhere?

you could make her a picture book or calendar at snapfish.com
you could get her parfume or a new necklace
gift cards to restaurants so she won't have to cook

Once again.... my mother in law..... she NEVER uses her cell phone. She and my father in law share one. They got one of those "senior" ones with the BIG buttons. We called them on it once and they couldn't figure out "what that noise was" so they never answered it. :-)

(I sense some parrallels in our lives, Rebeckah!

I hardly use my cellphone. Only when I am on a holiday or going to my sister to tell her the time when I am boarding the train and when there is a train late so that my whole schedule is at sixes and sevens.

My grandparents wanted a cell phone too but never turn it on. At least they pay for it themselves though! You're on a roll with the technology so get her a laptop this year ;) My grandpa (83) also emails... hilarious!

I say buy her a vacuum cleaner. My grandmothers had seen better days and we bought her one for christmas and she was over the moon.
Thanks for the WW comment...I use Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9. My mom is a photographer and this is what she uses. She showed me a few little things and the rest I'm learning trial and error. I probably do everything the long way around, but it gets done LOL. TY!

That is too cute! My mom doesn't want any part of a cell phone. My dad has one, but, he's always asking my teenage son to show him how to use it (to change his ringer, check his messages, etc.).

Cortney said...

That's funny. You might tell her to keep the phone in her purse and just turn it on and dial 911 send in an emergency because any cell phone even without service can call 911 if it's charged.
